[BURMA - PHOTOGRAPHS]., A collection of Twenty-five Original Gelatin Silver Photographs. About 1895.
[BURMA - PHOTOGRAPHS].
A collection of Twenty-five Original Gelatin Silver Photographs. About 1895.
. Twenty-five photographs with images of Rangoon and Mandalay, while the last two are of Penang Island and the Bridge of Penta K›ta. Each photo measures about 15 x 23 cm, four are slightly smaller. The photographs are pasted on grey thick paper (27 x 35 cm) with manuscript caption labels in French. A few of the photographs with minor silvering of the photo margins, the paper mounts have some mild traces of moisture exposure but overall the condition is very good. This is an interesting documentation of British Burma at the turn of the 20th century. (Burma was under British rule between 1886 and 1948). Fifteen of the photos are devoted to Rangoon and its vicinity; of the harbour, street scenes, elephant at work, several of the Shuedagon pagoda, of the Sule pagoda and a few of the countryside. Eight of the photos are taken in Mandalay: city views, the market, Shewenandaw Monastery and the Palace. The Mandalay Palace, built in 1857-9, was the primary royal residence of the last two kings of the country (King Mindon and King Thibaw) up until the Third Burmese War and the annexation by the British Empire. During World War II most of the palace compound was destroyed. The Shewenandaw Monastery is the single remaining major original structure of the original Royal Palace today.

[VIETNAM - PHOTOGRAPHS OF HILL TRIBES].
[A Collection of thirteen postcards with images of different ethnic minority groups]. About 1920s.
. The collection of b/w photo postcards (14 x 9 cm) illustrate different ethnic tribes from the highlands in the northern parts of Vietnam (Tonkin). At this time Vietnam was a French protectorate with a French governor. These minority groups still live in the remote mountainous terrain cultivating rice, vegetables and some are raising animals. The people always wear traditional clothes, more or less colourful, whether at home, in the field, or in town. The clothes of one group are quite different from that of other groups. The pictures depict people of different tribes in traditional clothes including Hmong, Tay, Nung, Dzao, Yéo and Yao (Dao), from the provinces of Là Cai (5), Cao Bâng (4), Son la (1), Ha Giang (1), Huyên (1) and Yén Bâi (1). Some of the cards have names written in French and Chinese on the verso.

Memoria circa certi riti Tunchinesi sostenuti da' Pp. Agostiniani e da Alcuni altri missionarj presentata da' Pp. Domenicani Spagnuoli della provincia delle Filippine alla Sacra Congregazione di Propaganda Fide. [Rome] 1757.
. Small 4to. Pp. 22. Green boards (19th century), cloth spine. With early ecclesiastical stamp on title and remains of old shelf label on upper cover. Some light foxing. First edition. Rare Spanish Dominican report on Confucian funeral customs in Tonkin, and about the Jesuits tolerance of these rites. Only one library copy found (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana).Vietnam, along with Korea and Japan, has been heavily influenced by China concerning its Confucian culture of certain funerary rites, especially in the cult of ancestors. The Chinese Rites Controversy and the Roman position regarding ancestor worship affected Vietnamese Catholicism as well, profoundly and extensively, even until today. The Dominicans and the Augustinians in contrast to the Jesuits refused any adaptation to local customs and were horrified by the practices of the Jesuits. Benito Llobresols was born in Gerona and served as Apostolic missionary in Tonkin between 1754 -1762.
